Banking & payment licensing

From offshore bank charters and EU electronic-money authorizations to PSP, money-transmission and lending regimes — banking and payment licensing is where credibility, capital and banking access are won or lost.

01 Overview

Banking and payment licensing is the most capital- and credibility-sensitive work we do. A charter or EMI authorization is not just a permit to move money — it determines who will bank you, which processors will onboard you, and what corridors you can actually serve at scale.

The choice between an offshore charter, an EU EMI and a U.S. structure is a choice about your business model, not about prestige. Offshore charters move quickly and support cross-border and private-banking models; EU EMIs unlock EEA passporting under supervision; U.S. structures open domestic rails but bring state-by-state complexity.

We take clients through the entire sequence — feasibility, entity and capital structuring, the application and supervisory engagement, and then the correspondent-banking and payment-partner introductions that turn an authorization into a functioning institution.

03 How the engagement runs
  1. 01

    Feasibility & jurisdiction mapping

We map your products, target markets and custody or money-flow model against the regimes that can lawfully serve them — then rank the realistic options on cost, timeline, credibility and banking access.

  2. 02

    Structuring & entity design

Incorporation, ownership and control structures, director requirements, registered office and the intercompany architecture regulators and banks expect to review.

  3. 03

    Application & regulator engagement

Business plan, financial model, AML/CFT programme, policies and every supporting exhibit — filed, then managed through queries and clarifications to determination.

  4. 04

    Banking & payments connectivity

Sponsor-bank, payment-processor and liquidity introductions. We treat banking as part of the licensing decision, because an authorization you cannot bank is not an operating business.

  5. 05

    Implementation & ongoing compliance

Custody and safeguarding arrangements, compliance staffing, monitoring and reporting, and support as your footprint expands into additional jurisdictions.

FAQ

banking & payments questions

Still deciding which pathway fits? That is exactly what the feasibility phase is for.Book a consultation.

It depends on the products and the customers. An EU EMI lets you issue electronic money and payment services with EEA passporting, and is the natural home for card programmes and European payment flows. An offshore charter supports lending, private banking and cross-border models where EU membership is not the goal. Many clients need one; some need both.

It varies substantially by regime and by the activities you intend to conduct — from modest paid-in capital for a restricted offshore charter to substantial regulatory capital for a full banking license or an EMI serving high volumes. We fix the real number for your specific model during feasibility rather than quoting a headline figure that will not apply.

This is the question that decides most banking projects, and we address it at the outset rather than after licensing. The answer depends on jurisdiction, structure, compliance maturity and the business model itself — some regimes and models are readily bankable, others are not. We will tell you which category you are in before you commit.

Yes — structuring, capital arrangements, the full application pack, supervisory engagement through to authorization, and then implementation support including banking, payment and compliance build-out.

Many businesses that think they need a bank charter are better served by a PSP, EMI or money-transmission authorization, which is lighter, faster and sufficient for the flows in question. Part of the feasibility work is telling you honestly when a smaller authorization is the correct answer.
